Sattelite Navigation

Satnav is becoming more and more popular and the good news is that prices are coming down. Apart from sat nav systems that are pre-installed by the car manufacturer, there are two main types of system. There are dedicated sat nav devices that can easily be transferred from car to car and then there are pda or pocket pc based devices. The advantage of the pda devices is that the unit can be used for loads more stuff like calendar, word documents, playing music through music player etc. The disadvantage is that most need loads of extra wiring for power, better sound and connection to a gps aerial.

There are devices such as the Mitac Mio 168 and Acer n35 that overcome these problems with an integral aerial. They can be a little more bulky than other pocket pcs but have the advantage that you can take your satnav anywhere and you don't need to be in a car.

Satnav systems have come down in price dramatically with TomTom and garmin systems available for under £100
